-Welcome to the world of the Successful Barbarian 

Imagine, 1500 years ago and you are entering a hall, a meadhall.  

The fires that light the hall fill the air with a slight tinge of smoke that tickles your throat and burns your nostrils.  The smell of roasted meat is detectable just under the smoke.  

Your eyes are watering from the smoke, but as you look around through the tears you see that the crowd is loud and a bit scary.  Eating with their hands and laughing and arguing like a group of drunken ....drunken.....well Barbarians.  

Are the stories you have heard true?  Could these people really know the secrets to getting whatever you want from life?  People dressed in animal skins and acting like this?

Is it possible that you could learn from the man in charge of these...these rabble rousers, how to make your dreams come true. 

Is it true that the Gods of the Asatruar really have some secret that the rest of the world lacks? 

These questions are swirling in your head when the Dryhten, sitting at the front of the hall, spies you.  

He motions and his men make ready.  But he looks to the lady of the hall, for this is her place.  He will follow her rede here.

She is a frithful woman and readily accepts your entry.  

“Welcome, welcome” the Dryhten calls.  “Happy to have you.  Please have a drink and some food.”  He motions to a servant who quickly brings you a horn full of the best mead that has ever passed your lips, and a meal fit for a king.

“You have come at a good time, I was just beginning to speak.” he says. 

This is what you have come for..this is why you are here.  This man is known for his words, for his ability to move people to action.  

He is known far and wide for his success in trade and war.  His wealth is legendary, and you have heard folk half way across the world wax poetic over his openhandedness.  

Is he going to convey a story about how to get more gold, or perhaps how to ensure that the men and women in your service are loyal. 

Ahhh!  Perhaps he will talk about the best way to make your spouse happy, or how to ensure your children learn the lessons they need to ensure they excel, once they leave your home.

Then he stands.  He is an impressive man, strong with a booming voice.  He raises his horn, and says:

“The “civilized” world would call me a Barbarian.  They would sneer at me, and say insulting things behind my back.  

They would smile to my face and roll their eyes when I am not looking.  

They would try and impose their ways on my “for my own good”. 

Well I am here to tell you, I am a Barbarian!!

Yes, 

I am a Barbarian
If I see something I want,
I take it

If I conceive of something I want,
I create it

In my veins does run the blood
of one thousand generations
and in my chest does beat the spirit
of one thousand generations

No one and nothing can keep me
from my goals, whatever they may be

With obsessive vigor and singularity of purpose
do I pursue my desires

With the wisdom of my forefathers
I obtain them

And by the example of my forefathers
do I share them for my benefit and that of my kin

I am a Barbarian and
the world is my playground
my passion - my strength
and my imagination my ONLY limitation”

And with that the large Dryhten hoists a horn of mead in the air and yells “Hail to the Barbarians! And hail to the Success Dryht!” 

What follows almost deafens you.  Everyone in the hall, some with tears in their eyes, raise their drinking vessels and yell at the top of their lungs “HAIL!!!”

With that the Dryten stands up and walks over to you.  He puts his arm around you and says, “So why have you come to my hall? What brings you across the world to share in the merriment and revelry? Certainly there are plenty of good times where you come from, so why the journey?”

“Do you want to learn my secrets to success, or are you just here to look around?” 

My friend, if you would like to learn the secrets that this Dryhten knows, the secrets that all the Dryhtens knew, that all these people knew.
